George II Mahogany Chest of Drawers C.1750

18th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

A good quality George II mahogany chest of drawers, dating from the mid-18th century, with pleasing colour. The rectangular moulded top sits above four graduated long drawers, the upper corners with an inverted/canted detail which gives the chest additional architectural interest. The drawers are fitted with attractive pierced brass handles and backplates. The chest stands on bracket feet and retains a pleasing finish. The quality of the piece is reflected in the oak-lined drawers and oak backboards. A handsome and practical Georgian chest of good proportions.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 88 cm

Width: 99 cm

Depth: 56 cm

CONDITION

Good, solid antique condition overall. The chest retains its original finish, which has acquired considerable character through age and use. There are various historic marks to the surface, including water and ink staining, together with the expected minor knocks, scratches and wear.

There are no significant cracks, splits or warping. The bracket feet are original, all four drawer locks remain present, and the old replacement handles pass through the original handle holes. The drawers all run smoothly and the chest remains very practical for everyday use.

There have been some minor historic repairs to the drawer cockbeading, as is commonly encountered on chests of this age. Overall, a good quality and pleasingly original Georgian chest, retaining an attractive aged surface and the character acquired over nearly three centuries.

As an antique or vintage piece, signs of age and use should be expected and are part of its character. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase. If any dimensions are critical, please check these with us before purchasing.

ABOUT ALSO ANTIQUE FURNITURE

Thank you for viewing this piece from Also Antique Furniture. We carefully select antique furniture and decorative objects for their quality, craftsmanship, character and individuality. Our tastes are broad, and we’re happy to be led by the piece rather than a particular period or style. Above all, we choose things we genuinely admire and would be happy to have in our own home. Every item is individually inspected, researched and professionally photographed, with clear descriptions and honest condition reports to help you buy with confidence.

We believe good furniture should have a long life. Choosing antique keeps well-made furniture and existing materials in use, and we favour sympathetic restoration that preserves the patina and character acquired over generations.

DELIVERY & COLLECTION

Collection is welcome by arrangement. We can usually arrange delivery throughout mainland UK using trusted independent couriers, charged at cost. As a general guide, delivery for an average-sized chest of drawers is typically £80–£100. Larger items and more remote locations will incur higher charges.

Most deliveries are completed within approximately two weeks, although faster delivery may sometimes be available. Please contact us with your postcode for a delivery quotation before purchasing.

AUTHENTICITY & CONDITION

We strive to describe every item as accurately and honestly as possible. Statements regarding age, attribution, origin and provenance are offered in good faith and represent our professional opinion based on the information available at the time of listing.

As all of our items are antique or vintage, signs of age and use should be expected. Old repairs, knocks, wear, variations in colour and other minor imperfections are often part of a piece’s history and character. Where condition affects its integrity, appearance or usefulness, we will endeavour to make this clear in the description.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The George II period (17271760) is noted for the widespread adoption of dense mahogany, which replaced walnut as the cabinetmakers wood of choice. Furniture from this era exhibits balanced proportions, clean architectural lines, graduated drawer arrangements, and classical hardware choices such as cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Primary exteriors were commonly built using solid or veneered West Indian or Cuban mahogany due to its durability and fine grain. Secondary timber for drawer linings and back panels typically consisted of native woods such as pine, oak, or deal, joined with hand-cut dovetails.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-sawn secondary timbers, irregular hand-cut dovetail joints, and evidence of hand planing on unseen panels. Original brass hardware often shows cast irregularities and hand-chased detail, while the base usually features authentic bracket feet with period-appropriate glue blocks.

Position the chest against a neutral backdrop to highlight the deep timber tone and natural grain pattern. Complement the piece with modern abstract art mounted above, modern ceramic table lamps, or minimal decorative accessories to balance classic antiques with contemporary living.

Apply a high-quality natural beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cloth, buffing gently along the grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, veneer splitting, or sun bleaching.
