Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 17th-century coffer is a heavy wooden storage chest featuring a hinged lid, constructed primarily during the Jacobean and Carolean eras to hold textiles, valuables, and household linens.

These chests were constructed using solid native timber, predominantly English oak, joined with hand-cut mortise and tenon joints held together by wooden pegs. Decorative elements included hand-carved arcading, geometric panel mouldings, and iron lock plates.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-tooling such as adze or pit-saw marks, irregular wooden pegs, historical shrinkage across the grain, iron hardware with hand-forged characteristics, and deep natural patination in unpolished crevices.

An antique coffer functions effectively in contemporary spaces when placed at the foot of a bed, positioned along an entryway hallway, or used as a central grounding piece in a living room, combining historical texture with practical storage.

Maintain the timber by keeping it in a stable environment away from direct heat sources and radiators. Regular dusting with a soft dry cloth and an occasional application of clear beeswax polish will protect the finish and preserve the wood.
