Rare Lloyd Loom and Oak Garden Room Armchair C1930

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Billy Hunt & Co.
Description

We have a very rare 1930s Lloyd Loom armchair often referred to as “Zeppelin chairs” as they were apparently made for luxury airship travel. We love the design and shape of this with the smart use of oak incorporated into the armchair. It possesses some charming historic wear in the right places and like most Lloyd Loom chairs it's so pleasant to sit in.

As mentioned, the condition of the heavy frame and loom is highly original with a little break at the lower rear, stable and not a concern. The separate seat cushion which sits above the original springs is perfectly usable but you may wish to replace it with a fabric of your choice - please let us know when ordering and we will assist. Clean and ready for placing. Paper makers label and date stamp to underneath of seat.

An ample sized, rare Lloyd Loom armchair C1930 perfect for a garden room, kitchen or quiet corner of a lounge…

Dimensions

Overall: Height 90cm x Width 55cm x Depth 67cm

Seat: Height 46cm x width 45-40cm (Front-Rear) x Depth 50cm

Billy Hunt and Co is located on a large Victorian farm just a short country drive from the Rangemore village, a designated conservation area, which was built by Michael Thomas Bass in the 1850s to house the Bass Rangemore Estate workers consisting mainly of Victorian redbrick cottages and the occasional barn.

Our home is a classic Victorian designed and well equipped late 19th century 2 story red brick built barn of some 4000 sq feet nestled in classic English countryside, which enjoyed a careful full renovation in 2000. The estate still benefits being managed in the traditional manner with an Estate Manger, estate carpenter, gardeners etc. A rather delightful place to have as our work space.

Martina, there is no Billy at Billy hunt, has led the team since 2103 and is an interior designer qualified from The Inchbald School of Design London whose previous working life included such clients as Vertu, Aston Martin and Johnnie Walker to name a few.

Please do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions on the pieces that may interest you - Many thanks Martina

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Invented in 1917 by Marshall Burns Lloyd, Lloyd Loom fabric is produced by twisting kraft paper around wire threads and weaving it on a loom. The technique gained widespread popularity in Britain during the 1920s and 1930s for indoor and conservatory seating.

These armchairs typically combine woven paper-wrapped wire fabric with a solid hardwood framework, frequently constructed from English oak. The front legs and armrests feature turned or carved oak details, complemented by an upholstered seat cushion.

Authentic examples often feature paper maker labels or metal plaques beneath the seat frame. Additional indicators include continuous wire-reinforced paper weave, turned oak showwood elements, and period-correct joinery beneath the upholstery.

Position the armchair in a sunroom, bedroom corner, or reading nook to introduce texture and historical context. Pairing the piece with neutral textiles and natural wood elements creates a balanced interior arrangement.

Dust the woven surfaces regularly using a soft brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner. Clean timber legs with a damp cloth and apply beeswax periodically, while keeping the piece away from direct dampness and extreme moisture.
