Sitter: James Robert Creighton, 1844–1896

Date: 1895
Place: London
Medium: Solid white marble

Catalogue Note
Creighton’s deeply modelled eyes, drilled pupils, pronounced moustache and long sideburns create a strongly individual likeness.

A broad classical mantle sweeps across the exposed upper chest and shoulders, giving the portrait an elevated commemorative character.
The 1895 date is significant. Creighton died in 1896 and Chavalliaud subsequently executed the portrait relief for the Creighton Memorial in Carlisle, erected in 1898.

The exact relationship between this marble and the later memorial remains unconfirmed, but the sculpture documents Chavalliaud’s representation of Creighton during his lifetime.
The Sitter
James Robert Creighton was a prominent Carlisle businessman, long-serving city councillor and twice Mayor of Carlisle.

The Sculptor
