Large and Impressive Victorian Portrait by W.r. Waters – Dated 1877

19th century
Description

Large and Impressive Victorian Portrait by W.R. Waters – Dated 1877

A substantial and finely executed mid-Victorian oil on canvas portrait of a seated lady, painted by the British artist W.R. Waters and signed and dated 1877 lower left.

The sitter is depicted in formal black dress with lace bonnet and jewellery, her pose composed yet engaging. She is seated beside a table with a stack of books, lending the work a refined and intellectual character. The artist’s attention to detail is evident in the careful rendering of textures – from the lustre of the silk gown to the intricate folds of lace and the sheen of the beads and watch chain.

Presented in a quality heavy gilt frame with richly moulded decoration, very much in keeping with the period and complementing the painting’s scale and presence.

Overall frame size: 97.5 cm x 118 cm

Condition: Good overall, with an attractive and even craquelure across the surface. Minor nicks and marks to the paint, and slight wear to the frame, all consistent with age. The portrait remains in a presentable and ready-to-hang state.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian portraiture typically features formal composition, detailed dress illustrating social status, and realistic visual representation executed in dark or rich oil tones on canvas.

Artists during this period applied oil pigments combined with drying oils onto stretched flax or linen canvas, usually framed in moulded wood with gold leaf gilding.

Authentic period artworks display uniform craquelure across the paint surface, age-related oxidation of protective varnish, stretcher bar markings on the reverse, and period-appropriate canvas weave.

Position the portrait as a dominant focal point above a mantelpiece or sideboard, contrasting the dark oil palette against neutral or richly painted walls.

Keep the painting away from direct sunlight, excess humidity, and heat sources, dusting the frame and surface lightly with a dry, soft camel-hair brush.
