Dr Wall / First Period Worcester Porcelain Blue Scale Wheatsheaf Patt. Teapot Stand C.1770

18th century
For Sale by The Fancy Fox
Description

A lovely Worcester teapot stand of hexagonal shape with scallop fluted walls and rim. Hand painted with a blue scale ground with "vase and mirror" shaped reserves painted in a kakiemon palette in what is often called the "wheatsheaf" pattern, alongside stylised flowering branches and chrysanthemums. Each reserve framed with gilt detail and finished with a gilt rim. Fretted square mark to the base, c.1770.

It measures 13cm (5 1/8") by 14.8cm (5 13/16") wide and 2cm (3/4") high.

In excellent condition: there is a small glaze loss to the underside of the rim on one corner; there is a slight firing abnormality to that small area so that probably lead to a weakness and the resultant loss, rather than actual damage (shown in the final photo). No other damage, repair or restoration and minor handling wear. A short firing line down the reverse of one of the flute creases.

Declaration

The Fancy Fox has dated this Worcester Porcelain Teapot Stand to the 18th Century.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Dr Wall First Period Worcester porcelain refers to ceramics manufactured by the Worcester Tonquin Factory between 1751 and 1783 under founder Dr John Wall, known for soaprock soft-paste porcelain, cobalt blue scale grounds, and elaborate hand-painted decoration.

These pieces were crafted using soft-paste porcelain containing steatite to withstand thermal shock from hot teapots, painted underglaze with cobalt blue scale patterning, and subsequently overglaze decorated with polychrome enamels and gilded cartouches.

Authentic examples typically display an underglaze blue fret or square mark on the underside, possess a subtle greenish translucency when held to light, and exhibit precise hand-painted scale patterning alongside period-correct gilding wear.

An antique porcelain stand can be showcased upright on an acrylic or brass display easel inside a glazed cabinet, laid flat on a console table as a dish for small items, or incorporated into a wall arrangement of fine ceramics.

Clean gently by hand using warm water and mild detergent with a microfibre cloth, avoiding soaking, hot water, abrasive cleaners, or scrubbers that could wear away overglaze enamelling and delicate hand gilding.
