Art Deco Birdseye Maple Dressing Table

1920 - 1940
Description

A stunning Art Deco birdseye maple dressing table / desk, made in England and dating from the 1930’s.

This has a gorgeous and very unique design, the quality is outstanding. It is a lovely slim size, the tops of each side flip up to reveal very useful inner storage space. It is a good height, so would be equally useful as a desk.

The lower pedestals have doors that open to reveal banks of tray slide shelves. This is predominantly birdseye maple, the pedestals sit on walnut bases and have walnut handles. The interior of the tops, bottoms and tray slide shelves are all made from ash.

We have had this stripped and re-polished to a very high standard, the condition is superb throughout.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco dressing tables from the 1920s and 1930s emphasized clean geometric lines, symmetrical forms, and high-contrast timber veneers. They often integrated functional storage innovations alongside sleek, modern silhouettes.

Cabinetmakers favoured figured timber veneers such as birdseye maple, walnut, and satinwood laid over solid hardwood frames. Details often included brass hardware, glass panels, or inlaid contrasting timber banding.

Original pieces display natural timber grain variations, hand-fitted joinery like dovetail drawers, and authentic period hardware or hinges. Aged patina on unexposed wood surfaces and subtle wear around handles also indicate period origin.

Positioning the piece as a focal point against a neutral wall allows the natural timber figure to stand out. Pairing it with a modern mirror and minimalist lighting creates a balanced blend of period style and contemporary aesthetics.

Regular dusting with a dry, soft cloth prevents dust build-up, while an occasional application of natural beeswax nourishes the wood finish. Direct sunlight and proximity to heat sources should be avoided to protect veneers from lifting or bleaching.
