Early 18th Century Large Oak Dresser Base Sideboard, English George I Period

18th century
Description

An Extremely Attractive Large Early 18th Century English George I Period Oak Dresser Base, Or Sideboard, Retaining Good Rich Colour And Surface Throughout, Having Well Figured Rectangular Top Over Three Drawers To Frieze, With Replacement Old Brass Handles, Raised On Four Elegant Baluster Turned Legs With Square Sections.

Oak dresser bases were an important and practical form of domestic furniture throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, originally providing both a useful working surface and easily accessible storage within the home. As a result they were generally subjected to considerable use and it is increasingly difficult to find good early examples which retain the character, colour and surface that makes them so desirable today.

This is a particularly attractive example, dating from the early part of the 18th century and of slightly larger proportions than the norm. Constructed from well chosen English oak throughout, it has developed a good rich colour and pleasing surface over the course of some 300 years, with the inevitable old marks, wear and minor imperfections, which one would expect on an item of this age, blending beautifully into the overall surface of the piece

The three drawers are of good practical size and the replacement old brass handles have clearly been in place for a considerable period of time and sit very comfortably on the piece.

Dresser bases of this type remain incredibly practical pieces of furniture for modern day living and the impressive length of this example makes it even more suitable for use as a sideboard in a dining room or kitchen, whilst still maintaining characteristically shallow depth which means it will work just as well in a hallway or general living space.

As with all the items which we offer for sale, it has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled and experienced traditional antique furniture restorers, ensuring that it is ready for placement straight into the home. Please note that there is a working lock and key for the just the middle drawer.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George I oak dresser base is an English low sideboard dating from the early eighteenth century, featuring storage drawers set above turned front legs, originally produced for food service and tableware storage in domestic settings.

These pieces were crafted primarily from native English oak, assembled using mortise and tenon joints held with wooden pegs, and fitted with hand-cast brass handles, keyhole escutcheons, and iron lock mechanisms.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-sawn timber marks, joinery secured with wooden pegs rather than modern screws, hand-dovetailed drawer construction, original keyhole escutcheons, and natural wear to the lower leg stretchers and feet.

An oak dresser base functions effectively as a hallway console table or dining room server, providing surface space for table lamps and ceramics while balancing contemporary artwork hung above the unit.

Preserve the timber finish by applying high-grade beeswax twice a year, keeping the furniture away from direct heat sources and radiators, and wiping surfaces down with a clean, dry cloth.
