Rare Pair of Early 19th Century Birdseye Maple Occasional Tables, Regency Period

19th century
Description

An Extremely Attractive, Very Good Quality And Relatively Rare Pair Of Early 19th Century Regency Period, Birdseye Maple Veneered Occasional Side Tables, Or End Tables, Each Having Superbly Figured Rectangular Tops And Friezes, Raised On Unusual And Elegant Triple Turned Column End Supports With Ebonised Turnings, United By Low Central Stretchers And Raised On Original Carved Scrolling Feet.

Birdseye maple was one of the most fashionable and highly prized decorative timbers employed by cabinet makers during the Regency period, its distinctive figuring and wonderfully warm golden colour making it particularly desirable for the production of fine quality furniture.

This pair are particularly unusual in their construction, with the triple column end supports creating an extremely elegant and architectural appearance. The contrasting ebonised turnings provide further decorative interest, whilst the low central stretchers give strength and balance to the overall design without detracting from their elegant appearance.

Occasional tables of this type were produced in relatively small numbers during the Regency period and it is very unusual to find a genuine pair like this still together. Their relatively narrow proportions also make them extremely practical for modern day use and they would work equally well as end tables alongside a sofa, as lamp tables, or positioned either side of a bed.

As with all items which we offer for sale, they have been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled and experienced traditional antique furniture restorers, ensuring that they are ready for placement straight into the home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency furniture, spanning roughly 1811 to 1830, is characterised by classical symmetry, light proportions, exotic wood veneers like birdseye maple or rosewood, and subtle decorative ebonising or turned spindle accents.

Cabinetmakers predominantly used fine timber veneers such as birdseye maple, satinwood, and rosewood, often paired with solid oak or pine carcass wood and featuring ebonised turned spindle details or brass fittings.

Genuine pieces exhibit distinctive figure patterns in the veneer, hand-cut dovetail joints or timber mortise and tenon joinery, subtle natural patination, and age-appropriate wear around footstools and stretcher bases.

These slender, lightweight tables function effectively paired on either side of a sofa, flanking a grand doorway, or positioned beneath artwork to add warm timber tones and architectural structure to modern spaces.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice per year, avoiding direct sunlight, heat sources, and harsh chemical solvents to preserve the delicate timber veneer.
