Antique Victorian Satinwood Sheraton Revival Lyre-back Desk Chair C.1890

19th century
Description

A late 19th century satinwood open armchair, the sweeping lyre-form back framed by ebonised stringing and topped by a cresting rail set with a fan patera inlay, over a pierced arcaded splat centred by a bone inlay depicting a classical putto, all set over an upholstered seat flanked by shaped arms and raised on ring-turned legs united by stretchers.

Directly referencing Thomas Sheraton’s 1790s Neo-Classical designs, late Victorian London workshops executed these light satinwood forms with exceptional precision, using minute hand-engraved cross-hatching across the bone and timber inlays, as showcased in the butterfly-winged putto motif. With its compact proportions and airy lyre back, the piece functions effortlessly at a writing desk, within a dressing room or as a decorative accent in a bedroom.

Very good antique condition, showing minor surface wear and authentic patination consistent with age. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1890.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sheraton Revival furniture emerged in the late 19th century, inspired by the late 18th-century Neoclassical designs of Thomas Sheraton. The style is recognised for its rectilinear forms, delicate proportions, slenderness, turned or tapered legs, and decorative timber embellishments such as painted motifs, lyre splats, and marquetry inlays.

Desk chairs from the late Victorian period often utilised hardwoods like satinwood, mahogany, and walnut. Construction featured traditional joinery, turned stretchers, carved or inlaid back splats, and upholstered seats secured with brass studs or decorative piping.

Authentic 19th-century satinwood exhibits a distinct shimmering grain pattern and a warm golden hue developed through natural ageing. Original pieces showcase hand-cut joinery, authentic period wear on turned stretchers and armrests, and hand-applied marquetry or painted detailing rather than modern printed veneers.

A lyre-back armchair functions effectively as a focal desk chair in a home study or as an accent piece in a bedroom corner or hallway. Pairing the lighter satinwood tone with neutral walls or dark timber desks creates visual contrast while highlighting the carved silhouette.

To preserve satinwood, keep the item away from direct sunlight and radiators to avoid drying the timber and fading the finish. Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the wood and maintain its patina.
