Pair 18th Century Paintings of the Siblys Cumae + Delphi, Circa 1700. French School.

18th century
Description

This pair of magnificent 18th Century oil on canvas paintings of Sibyl of Cumae: Often depicted with fish, symbolizing her prophetic nature and connection to the sea. She was known for her oracles and is one of the most famous Sibyls in ancient literature.

Sibyl of Delphi: Commonly shown with a book, representing wisdom and knowledge. She was associated with the Oracle of Delphi and is recognized for her significant role in Greek and Roman mythology.

These figures were prominent in both classical and later Renaissance art, often embodying themes of prophecy, wisdom, and divine inspiration.

The word "Sibyl" comes (via Latin) from the ancient Greek word sibylla, meaning "prophetess". There were many Sibyls in the ancient world, but the Persian Sibyl allegedly foretold the exploits of Alexander of Macedon. Nicanor, who wrote a life of Alexander, mentions her.

These paintings are part of a set of nine and can be purchased as a set at the moment.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sibyls were prophetic women from ancient Greco-Roman mythology who were later adopted into Christian iconographic traditions. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, painters frequently depicted them in allegorical settings to symbolize divine wisdom, classical learning, and spiritual foresight.

Artworks from this period were primarily executed using natural pigment-based oil paint on hand-woven linen or hemp canvas. Framing typically featured carved wood finished with water gilding over red bole or gesso preparations.

Authentic period canvases usually demonstrate natural craquelure patterns across the paint surface, historic stretcher bars with hand-forged nails, and visible signs of age-related oxidation on the reverse of the fabric.

A symmetrical pair of historical portraits can be positioned above a sideboard, console, or mantelpiece to create an anchor point in a room. Combining dark, traditional artwork with contemporary clean-lined furniture provides a balanced visual contrast.

Oil paintings should be displayed away from direct sunlight, excess moisture, and central heating sources. Dusting should be performed gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive materials on both the canvas and gilded surfaces.
