Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 19th century, particularly throughout the Victorian era, natural history collecting and taxidermy became prominent features of British country house interiors. Stag head mounts were traditionally displayed in entry halls, billiard rooms, and libraries as representations of sporting traditions and natural history study.

Victorian taxidermists utilised cured animal hides stretched over sculpted wooden or straw forms, fitted with glass eyes and original antler structures. The completed mount was attached to a wooden shield, typically carved from oak, walnut, or mahogany.

Authentic 19th-century taxidermy features period-appropriate glass eyes, hand-carved timber backplates showing age-related oxidation, and period mounting hardware such as forged iron hangers. The stitching and internal structure often display traditional materials like tow, plaster, or wooden armatures rather than modern synthetic foams.

A taxidermy stag head serves as a architectural focal point when positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece, within a library, or along an entry hall. It pairs naturally with dark wood furniture, muted wall paint tones, and woven wool textiles.

Position the mount in a stable environment away from direct sunlight, moisture, and high heat sources to avoid hide shrinkage. Gently clean the fur and antlers using a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth following the natural direction of the hair, avoiding aqueous or chemical liquid cleaners.
