Antique Edwardian Inlaid Mahogany Revolving Bookcase

19th century
Description

An outstanding antique Edwardian inlaid mahogany revolving bookcase. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1890-1910 period.

It is of exceptional quality, with a beautiful and useful design. The mahogany has a gorgeous colour tone and grain patterns, there are wonderful satin wood inlays on the top with cross banded edges, and there is alternating banding of satin wood and mahogany around the outer top edge. This has lots of storage space for books and objects, the bookcase spins on a solid mahogany cross framed base with porcelain casters.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age with just some extremely minor wear remaining here and there.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, a revolving bookcase is a compact, multi-tiered storage unit mounted on a rotating central mechanism designed to allow access to books from all four sides.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, frequently accented with decorative satinwood or boxwood marquetry inlays and supported by brass castors.

Authentic examples typically feature a heavy cast-iron rotating mechanism beneath the base, hand-cut joinery, period-correct brass castors, and refined satinwood stringing or patera inlays characteristic of early 20th-century cabinetry.

A revolving bookcase functions effectively as an occasional side table alongside an armchair or sofa, offering dual utility as a surface for lighting and structured storage for reading materials.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly along the grain, and ensure the smooth operation of the internal revolving mechanism by keeping it free of dust.
