Antique Regency Ebonised Chinoiserie Work Table C.1830

19th century
Description

A Regency period ebonised Chinoiserie work table, the japanned top hand-painted with a landscape scene, set over a single frieze drawer with conforming faux drawer to the reverse, all raised on flat trestle uprights with stepped base collars, united by a central shaped cross-stretcher.

Chinoiserie enjoyed a fashionable revival during the Regency period, with English workshops creating high-style japanned furniture to satisfy the aristocracy's taste for romanticised Far Eastern imagery. Decorated on all four sides to allow for freestanding use when pulled directly up to a sitter, its compact profile allows it to float beside an armchair, sit between drawing room seating or serve as a neat side table in a hallway.

Very good antique country house condition, displaying genuine age-appropriate wear including minor localized paint loss, historic timber shrinkage splits across the top panel and a gentle lean to one side characteristic of early trestle designs. Structurally sound and ready for placement in the home.

English, circa 1830.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency Chinoiserie furniture blends early 19th-century British neoclassical forms with European interpretations of East Asian artistic traditions. Pieces typically feature dark, ebonised, or lacquered surfaces ornamented with hand-painted gilt landscapes, floral motifs, and figurative scenes.

Work tables from this era were commonly constructed from hardwoods such as mahogany or pine, which were then ebonised or japanned with dark lacquer. Decorative finishes incorporated hand-applied gold leaf or metallic pigments, brass hardware, and turned timber components.

Authentic Regency work tables feature period construction hallmarks including hand-cut dovetail joints, original wooden drawer linings, and hand-turned knobs. Surface wear, subtle craquelure in the painted lacquering, and Regency design elements like trestle bases or lyre supports also indicate age.

A compact chinoiserie table functions as an accent piece beside an armchair, within a hallway, or in a quiet alcove. Its dark tones and detailed gilt work complement both neutral backdrop palettes and rich, dark interior design schemes.

Preserve the finish by dusting regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth without liquid polish or abrasive cleaners. Keep the table away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent the timber from warping or the lacquer from lifting.
