Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sword sticks, or sword canes, emerged as popular accessories for European gentlemen in the 18th and 19th centuries. As carrying sidearms in public became socially unacceptable, these concealed weapons allowed individuals to maintain a means of self-defence disguised within a fashionable everyday walking cane.

Upper-tier 19th-century sword canes were crafted using hard woods such as malacca, bamboo, or rosewood for the shaft. Handles and collars often incorporated precious metals, chased brass, carved ivory, or hand-painted Sevres style porcelain, concealing a forged steel blade inside.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature hand-painted cartouches, often depicting romantic or classical scenes, set against rich cobalt blue or turquoise grounds with gilded scrollwork. The metal mountings typically show light wear, age-appropriate oxidisation, and precise fitting around the concealed mechanism.

A decorative sword stick is best showcased as a curio within a glass display cabinet, laid flat on a library desk, or mounted vertically on a wall bracket. It can also be placed alongside other antique walking sticks in a ceramic or cast-iron umbrella stand.

Clean the porcelain section using a dry, soft microfibre cloth without harsh liquid cleaners. To preserve the steel blade, apply a thin coat of microcrystalline wax or mineral oil periodically to prevent rust, ensuring the locking mechanism remains free of moisture.
