Mendlesham Chair - Mid 19th Century

19th century
For Sale by M Cross Antiques
Description

A mid-19th-century Mendlesham chair in fruitwood having three rippled back splats and an elm seat with a scribe line to the outer edge. Finished on turned tapering legs with an H stretcher.

This higly decorative style of chair were manufactured in the Mendlesham area of Suffolk during the early and mid-19th century, originally by Richard Day, although after his death in 1838 other makers in the area appeared to follow in his footsteps until about 1860. It is thought that originally these chairs were not intended for daily use but were made for special occasions and given as gifts at weddings or baptisms.

The creation of such superior chairs from a small pastoral village in rural Suffolk is a remarkable event in the history of English craftwork. If Day was the original designer of this style, he was certainly an innovative craftsman whose knowledge extended beyond his immediate village indicating that he had possibly travelled to larger metropolitan areas or High Wycombe where chairs of a similar stature were made.

In very good condition with age-related wear and tear.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in Suffolk, England, during the early 19th century, a Mendlesham chair is a distinctive regional variation of the traditional Windsor chair. It is characterised by a squared backrest frame enclosing turned wooden spheres, pierced splats, and shaped armrests.

Mendlesham chairs were crafted using native British hardwoods, frequently incorporating yew or fruitwood for the back spindles and turned details, solid elm for the contoured saddle seat, and beech or ash for the legs and stretchers.

Authentic period examples feature hand-turned wooden spheres set between the back rails, hand-shaped seat contours showing subtle tool marks, pegged mortise and tenon joinery, and an uneven, naturally aged surface patina.

Position the chair as a standalone accent piece in a study, pair it with a contemporary writing desk, or mix it into an eclectic dining arrangement alongside modern upholstered seating.

Keep the wood situated away from direct heat sources and bright sunlight to prevent shrinkage, dust regularly with a clean microfibre cloth, and apply a natural beeswax polish annually to protect the original finish.
