Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Komai style vesta case is a portable friction match container produced in Japan, predominantly during the Meiji period (18681912). They are characterised by intricate gold and silver damascene inlay (nunome-zogan) hammered into a dark, oxidised iron or steel body.

Artisans created damascene ware by cross-hatching an iron or steel surface to create fine micro-grooves. Gold and silver wire or foil was hammered into these grooves to form detailed designs before the base metal was chemically blackened and polished.

Authentic pieces feature highly detailed gold and silver inlay set flush against a dark, smooth iron background. Look for signature marks on the underside or interior rim, crisp detail in the motifs, and precise hand-finished hinges.

Small decorative metalwork items such as vesta cases are displayed on desk trays, mantelpieces, or curated bookshelves alongside other historical curiosities to add texture and historical interest to contemporary spaces.

Keep the item in a low-humidity environment to prevent corrosion of the iron ground. Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid chemical polishes, water, or abrasive cleaners that could damage the delicate gold inlay.
