Original Early 19th Century Lithographic Metal Printing Plate John Horner Halifax Pontifex & Stiles

19th century
Description

Original 19th Century Lithographic Printing Plate

John Horner – Halifax, Yorkshire

Pontifex & Stiles, 23 Lisle Street, Soho, London

A fascinating original antique metal printing plate relating to a nineteenth-century view of Halifax, Yorkshire.

The plate carries the maker/supplier's impressed stamp to the reverse:

PONTIFEX & STILES

23 LISLE STREET SOHO

LONDON

The printing surface retains the detailed image of a substantial stone monument or architectural feature, with numerous figures gathered around it.

The engraved/lithographic inscription associated with the image reads in reverse and appears to identify the original artist as John Horner, with wording corresponding to “Drawn from Nature & on Stone by John Horner.”

This plate is particularly interesting as a surviving piece of the physical printing process rather than simply a later impression on paper.

Pontifex & Stiles were established London manufacturers and suppliers associated with the printing trades, operating from Lisle Street, Soho.

The plate has clearly seen considerable working use and subsequently survived rather than being melted down or discarded.

Condition

Antique working condition with considerable surface oxidation, spotting, scratches, marks and general wear, as clearly shown in the photographs. There are areas of pale/white surface oxidation and two more pronounced circular marks towards the lower centre.

These have deliberately not been cleaned or polished, preserving the plate in the condition in which it was acquired.

Size of plate is approx. 28 x 23 cm

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A lithographic metal printing plate is a prepared metal sheet, typically made of zinc or polished copper, etched or drawn upon to transfer images or text onto paper using oil-based inks during the nineteenth century.

These plates were produced by specialized metal founders, such as Pontifex & Stiles, who smoothed and polished sheets of zinc, brass, or copper before artists etched chemical-resistant illustrations onto the surface.

Authentic plates feature reversed (mirror-image) etched designs, maker stamps or touchmarks along the borders or reverse, and evidence of historical ink deposits or natural surface oxidisation.

Display the plate as a tactile wall art piece using custom acrylic mounts, or position it flat inside a glass display case on a desk or library shelf to highlight the intricate metalwork.

Maintain the plate by dusting it with a soft dry brush, keeping it in a low-humidity environment, and avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip the historic patina.
