A Chelsea Porcelain Bonbonnière C. 1755

Description

A Chelsea Porcelain Bonbonnière c. 1755. Modelled as a lady's head, wearing a frilled bonnet laced with pink and yellow ribbons, a rosette and three feathers secured at the front, her face delicately coloured and beauty spot.

A similar example from the Garrick Bond Collection was sold by Bonhams on 17 May 2017, lot 160. The fashion for beauty spots, thought to emphasise the whiteness of skin and concurrently hide pockmarks ascertained by more lascivious means.

Condition: Old restoration where the bonbonnière has been broken in half straight through the head, down along the forehead, along side the nose, through the mouth and down the chin. The repainting covers the crack along the aforementioned route and is mainly noticeable on the forehead. The painting to the eyes all looks original. The interior has been overpainted in white to disguise the crack. There also appears to be a filled chip to the rim
