Austrian Cold-painted Bronze Group

1900 - 1920
Description

BERGMAN: a good late 19th/early 20th century Austrian COLD-PAINTED BRONZE group depicting an Arab Trader offering his slave for sale. He is dressed in robes and turban, whilst she is near naked, hand on hip, wearing just jewellery. Both stand on a typically decorated Eastern carpet. Good condition with paintwork in fine order. Signed underneath with the Bergman trademark (the letter “B” within an urn) together with “Geschultz” which means copyright. 7ins wide; 8ins high; 5ins deep.

** FRANZ XAVER BERGMAN (1861-1936) was the most prominent of the Viennese cold-painted bronze artists. Bergman Senior was originally trained as a “chaser” (engraver and finisher of bronzes) and later the owner of a foundry that produced these colourful patinated bronze figures. His son took over the business and opened a new foundry in 1900, and became renowned for his beautiful bronzes of animals; Arab and Oriental subjects and some erotic ones (which were signed ‘Namgreb” ~ his name backwards). Highly collectable these days.
