Silver Pair-cased Watch & Chain

Description

An interesting mid-19th century silver “pair-cased” POCKET WATCH in full working order. It is complete with an unusual chain comprising 15 Japanese silver 5-Sen coins; hallmarked bar and hallmarked silver cross. Both outer and inner silver cases are fully hallmarked (London 1857) and the original verge movement works perfectly. This is signed by the maker: Tanner & Son, of Cliffe, LEWES (East Sussex). Good convex white enamel dial (no damage) and the “spade” hands are probably gold. The watch is 6 cms diameter.

** William TANNER was born in 1799 and when aged 14 travelled to Gibraltar to learn clockmaking. After a 7-year apprenticeship he moved his business to Lewes in 1834. He was joined by his son Stephen who apart from being a watchmaker was also active as a local ship-owner and managing agent for Newhaven registered sailing ships.
