The piece presents as a tall, upright chest of four drawers beneath a sloping lid.
When closed, the gently sloping surface serves as a convenient writing slope. Below the lockable top section is a shallow drawer, followed by three deeper graduated drawers, all fitted with matching brass oval pulls of period form. The case stands on simple short legs and shows the honest construction typical of provincial work, combining pine and oak.
The original hand-painted finish is a major feature of the piece. It has developed a desirable, time-worn patina with areas of natural paint loss and wear, particularly on edges, drawer fronts and the sloping lid, revealing the underlying timber in places. This authentic surface has not been stripped or heavily restored and is exactly the kind of dry, aged finish sought by collectors of painted country furniture.
