Antique Late 19th Century Chinese Lacquered Robe Stand

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique Late 19th Century Chinese Lacquered Clothes Rack / Robe Stand

An elegant carved Chinese provincial robe stand (clothes rack or towel rail) dating from the late Qing dynasty, circa 1880–1900. Built in a classic minimalist oriental silhouette, this freestanding rack beautifully combines functional design with traditional decorative elements.

The upper frame consists of two slender, rounded upright support posts holding a top rail that terminates in beautifully hand-carved, upturned scroll finials. Two further horizontal bars sit below, reinforced at the joints with carved cloud-form brackets and scrolling spandrels. A central turned peg extends from the top rail, offering an additional hanging option for hats or garments.

The rack is anchored at the base by wide sledge feet flanked by prominent, deeply carved openwork scroll brackets. The uprights are joined at the bottom by an attractive pierced geometric lattice stretcher panel, which doubles as an excellent shelf space for shoes, bags, or folded textiles.

The piece is finished in an authentic, warm reddish-brown provincial lacquer. Beneath the lacquer, the frame is constructed from a regional timber—most likely a lighter Chinese hardwood or regional pine typical of provincial domestic furniture from this period. It boasts a naturally aged patina with historic wear and minor surface marks that enhance its period character.

A highly versatile statement piece of functional furniture ideal for use as a coat rack in a hallway, a robe stand in a bedroom, or an exotic towel rail in a spacious bathroom.

Overall good antique condition. Structurally sound with no loose joints. Please note that a couple of minor wooden pegs are historically missing from the top rail (one from each side), leaving the central pegs remaining. This does not impact structural integrity. The original lacquered finish shows a desirable aged patina with minor scuffs, light surface abrasions, and historical marks consistent with age and careful use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Historically used in Chinese households during the Ming and Qing dynasties, robe stands served to display and hold official gowns and garments flat, preventing creasing prior to the widespread adoption of modern enclosed wardrobes.

They were typically crafted from hardwoods or softwoods using mortise and tenon joinery without metal nails, then finished with coats of natural tree resin lacquer blended with mineral pigments.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, visible wear along natural contact points, age-related craquelure in the lacquer coat, and carved terminal motifs such as lingzhi fungus or dragon scrolls on the upper crossbeam.

A freestanding robe stand functions as a architectural focal point in a bedroom, hallway, or dressing room, ideal for hanging textiles, blankets, or coats while providing vertical visual interest.

Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, avoid harsh chemical cleansers, and position the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent timber shrinkage and lacquer flaking.
