Webberley Antiques has dated this George III Bachelors Chest to the 18th Century.
Original steel locks with an early working and apparently original key.
Of rarely seen very small proportions.
The top and side panels are made from single boards of solid mahogany and indicate a top quality cabinet maker. The choice of timber and the attention paid to the grain gives the chest a wonderful flow of swirling colour across the drawer fronts.
The brushing slide original also and solid mahogany over four graduated drawers.
Some drawer linings with replaced timbers (probably 19th century restoration) and some linings with a couple of old worm holes but nothing significant – a few holes and long since treated and dead.
The drawers open and close smoothly and are very well fitted.
The chest has some dings, scratches, marks and knocks consistent with age and very caring use.
This chest was made by a top quality cabinet maker using the finest quality timbers.
This chest would have been a very expensive commission and has clearly always been valued and looked after.
The term bachelor chest derives from the demand in the 18th century for compact and multi-functional furniture for young single men who rented rooms, often quite small. These bachelors needed storage space and a brushing slide or fold out top for keeping their clothes in best condition in a fairly cramped environment.
Set on lovely original bracket feet with carved roundel at hips and with original glue blocks behind the feet.
A rarely found, and desirably small, fully functional George III bachelor’s chest of drawers just 26 inches wide and 30 inches tall.
Dimensions are:
30 inches high, 26.5 inches wide and 17 inches deep. The inner (usable) height of the drawers are – top drawer, 3.25 inches, second drawer, 4.25 inches, third drawer 4.5 inches and bottom drawer 5.5 inches.
