Description

A fine and rare pearlware pottery mug, very well modelled with a Bacchus mask with pointed ears and small horns. Decorated in prattware enamels of brown, ochre, green and dark blue and the rim and the edge of the wide strap handle edged in blue also. Unmarked, c.1800. 

It measures 10.2cm (4") high, 14.5cm (5 3/4") from to back and 8.3cm (3 1/4") wide. 

Condition is very excellent; there is one small chip to the back just below the rim to the side of the handle. No other damage, repair or restoration. A little discolouration unside and under the base. Very minor handling wear and the enamels are lovely and bright.

The Fancy Fox has dated this Prattware Bacchus Satyr Mug to the Georgian era.

Prattware refers to English relief-moulded earthenware produced primarily between 1790 and 1840, characterised by distinct underglaze polychrome decoration using high-temperature oxide colours such as cobalt blue, ochre, green, and manganese brown.

Pearlware was crafted from white earthenware clay enhanced with cobalt oxide added to the glaze, creating a subtle blue tint in crevices that mimicked Chinese porcelain, finished with hand-painted mineral oxide decoration and a clear lead glaze.

Authentic pieces display characteristic underglaze colour palettes restricted to blue, green, yellow, brown, and black, subtle blue pooling of glaze around relief features, light-coloured earthenware bodies, and period-appropriate hand-moulded details.
