Georgian Mahogany Two-tier Tripod Etagere Circa 1780

18th century
Description

A charming George III mahogany two-tier occasional table, dating to circa 1780, of particularly useful proportions and good warm colour.

The table has two graduated circular tiers, each with a finely moulded raised edge, the upper tier supported on a turned central column. The lower tier is raised on a turned baluster stem above a shaped tripod base terminating in elegant cabriole legs and pad feet.

Standing 71cm high, this is an especially practical example, making it ideal for use as a side table or lamp table beside a sofa or armchair, whilst the two tiers provide useful additional display or storage space.

A very attractive and versatile piece of late 18th-century Georgian furniture, with pleasing proportions and a lovely mellow mahogany colour.

English, circa 1780.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 18th century, a dumbwaiter is a multi-tiered occasional table designed to hold dining accessories, desserts, or condiments, allowing guests to serve themselves without servants present in the dining room.

These pieces were typically crafted from solid mahogany, featuring hand-lathed circular tiers, a turned central support pillar, and hand-cut joinery connecting the tripod legs to the central column.

Authentic Georgian pieces display hand-turned central columns, slight timber movement or grain variation across tiers, hand-carved cabriole legs, and original wear along the pad feet where the piece meets the floor.

A two-tier table functions effectively as an accent piece beside an armchair, an elevated plant stand in an alcove, or a layered display surface for ceramics and books in a living area.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish along the wood grain twice a year, keeping the table away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber drying.
