Pair of Victorian Mahogany Three Drawer Bedside Chests (Adapted) C.1880

19th century
Description

A pair of late Victorian mahogany bedside chests dating from the late 19th century, each fitted with three generously sized drawers and standing on attractive shaped bracket feet.

Originally adapted from larger pieces of Victorian furniture, these chests have been thoughtfully converted to create an exceptionally practical pair of bedside cabinets. Their clean, understated design allows the beautiful mahogany grain and rich warm colour to take centre stage, making them equally suited to both period and contemporary interiors.

Each chest is fitted with three smooth-running drawers offering useful storage, complemented by brass oval drop handles that enhance their classic appearance. The tops provide ample space for bedside lamps or decorative accessories, while the compact proportions make them ideal for bedrooms where storage is at a premium.

Presented in good antique condition with a pleasing mellow patina and the expected minor marks and wear associated with age and use. The adaptation has been sympathetically carried out, resulting in a sturdy and attractive pair ready for everyday use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late Victorian bedside furniture typically features dense hardwoods like mahogany, robust construction methods, and compact proportions designed for domestic bedroom storage.

Primary timber was commonly Honduran or Cuban mahogany, accompanied by softwoods or oak for internal drawer linings, and cast brass for handles and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer sides, natural timber oxidisation on unfinished surfaces, period brassware, and age-consistent wear.

Positioning a matching pair alongside a contemporary upholstered bed creates symmetry, while pairing warm wood tones with light neutral walls balances visual weight.

Dust regularly using a dry lint-free cloth, apply a high-grade beeswax polish sparingly along the grain once or twice annually, and keep clear of direct heat sources.
