Antique Victorian Carved Walnut His & Hers Salon Chairs C.1880

19th century
For Sale by MebleinUK
Description

A beautiful and highly decorative pair of antique Victorian His & Hers salon chairs, dating from approximately 1880–1900.

This elegant matched pair consists of a larger gentleman's armchair and a slightly smaller lady's chair, a classic combination found in Victorian drawing rooms and parlours.

Both chairs feature beautifully shaped walnut frames with carved decorative detailing, turned front legs and elegant proportions. The gentleman's chair is finished with substantial shaped arms and upholstered armrests, while the lady's chair has an open-sided design giving it a lighter and more delicate appearance.

The high upholstered backs and generously padded seats are finished in an attractive traditional floral tapestry-style fabric in soft green, pink, blue and gold tones. Deep buttoning to the backrests adds further period character.

The warm walnut frames have developed an attractive colour and patina, with the carved details particularly effective around the upper backrests and shoulders.

Both chairs stand on turned front legs with castors, another characteristic detail of quality Victorian seating from this period.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Designed in the mid-to-late 19th century for formal drawing rooms, his and hers salon chairs are complementary pairs of seating where the gentlemans chair features armrests and higher proportions, while the ladys chair is armless to comfortably accommodate structured skirts and dresses.

Frames were typically crafted from hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, showcasing hand-carved floral or foliate details. Traditional upholstery used coil springs, webbing, and natural fillings such as horsehair, covered in damask, velvet, or needlepoint fabrics.

Authentic pieces feature solid timber frames with hand-carved crestings, lap or mortise and tenon joinery, and original brass or ceramic castors on the front legs. Look for natural age patina on the timber and hand-stitching on the underside webbing.

Position the pair alongside a modern sofa or in an alcove to create a dedicated reading corner. Placing them against neutral backwalls allows the dark timber carving and patterned upholstery to serve as an architectural focal point.

Dust timber frames regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply beeswax sparingly along the grain to preserve the finish. Lightly vacuum textile upholstery using a low-suction brush attachment, and keep the chairs away from direct sunlight or heat sources to prevent timber warping and fabric fading.
