Kpm Berlin Biedermeier Cabinet Cup and Saucer with Painted Landscapes, C.1830

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

An elegant antique German hard-paste porcelain cabinet tea or coffee cup and saucer, attributed to the Royal Porcelain Factory in Berlin (Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur), circa 1830.

Produced during the Biedermeier period, the set combines finely painted landscape miniatures with richly tooled gilding characteristic of high-quality Berlin cabinet porcelain from the first half of the 19th century. High-quality cabinet porcelain was occasionally produced without factory marks.

The cup is formed in the classic KPM Glockenform, or bell shape, with gently curved walls, a simple gilt loop handle and a richly burnished gilt interior. Both pieces are decorated with finely hand-painted polychrome enamel landscapes depicting an idealised German countryside.

The landscape reserves are enclosed within a refined tooled gilt border on a crisp white ground. The decoration is divided into four symmetrical sections by stylised bellflower or lotus-bud motifs with C-scroll volutes, alternating with feathered palmettes and delicate botanical sprays executed in burnished gold.

The undersides retain their unglazed foot rims, with expected light shelf wear and minor firing characteristics consistent with early 19th-century porcelain production.

Dimensions:

Cup: weight 100 g

height 6 cm

width including handle 9.5 cm

diameter 7.6 cm. Saucer: weight 97 g

diameter 13.2 cm

height 3 cm

Condition:

Light wear to the gilding on both pieces. The saucer has a stable hairline crack visible on the exterior but not from the interior. Otherwise, both pieces remain in excellent antique condition.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging and postage.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Biedermeier porcelain, originating in Central Europe between 1815 and 1848, features clean neoclassical forms, rich burnished gilding, and detailed hand-painted scenes such as landscapes, city views, or botanical motifs.

These items were crafted from hard-paste porcelain, kiln-fired at high temperatures, decorated with overglaze enamel paintings, and finished with applied gold leaf gilding that was burnished with agate tools.

Authentic KPM pieces generally bear the cobalt blue painted sceptre mark underglaze, often accompanied by red or brown printed or painted painter marks, orb stamps, and precise impressed numbers along the foot rim.

Display individual cabinet cups and saucers inside glazed cabinets, on open shelving units, or on sideboard tops alongside understated contemporary art to highlight their historical craftsmanship.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and a mild non-abrasive detergent applied with a soft cloth. Avoid soaking, dishwasher use, chemical solvents, or scrubbing pads, as these will wear away the soft gold leaf overglaze.
