Late Victorian Ruby & Old Cut Diamond Ring in 18ct Gold Circa 1890

19th century
Description

Gorgeous Late Victorian 18ct Gold Ruby & Diamond Ring

A particularly attractive late Victorian ruby and diamond ring, finely handcrafted in 18 carat yellow gold and dating to circa 1890.

The ring is set with three beautiful graduated rubies displaying a rich, vibrant red with attractive raspberry tones. A larger central ruby is flanked by two slightly smaller stones, creating the classic graduated arrangement so characteristic of fine Victorian jewellery.

Between the rubies are four sparkling old-cut diamonds, arranged in two pairs. The diamonds provide a lovely flash of white light against the deeper colour of the rubies and warm yellow gold, giving the ring a wonderfully lively appearance.

The stones are set above an ornate Victorian gallery with attractive scrolling shoulders. The gallery retains its lovely original character, with some age-related wear to the sides consistent with well over a century of use.

Weighing an impressive 4.5 grams, the ring has a reassuringly substantial feel while retaining an elegant appearance on the hand. The combination of ruby, old-cut diamond and 18ct yellow gold is quintessentially Victorian and has an enduring appeal.

A charming and beautifully made antique ring that would make a wonderful dress ring, collector's piece or distinctive antique engagement ring.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late Victorian gemstone rings, produced between 1880 and 1901, frequently feature multi-stone arrangements set in high-carat yellow gold, including carved boat or bridge gallery designs incorporating coloured gemstones and diamonds.

Jewellers during the Late Victorian era commonly utilised 18ct yellow gold alongside natural gemstones such as rubies, sapphires, and emeralds, often paired with hand-cut diamonds like old mine or old European cuts.

Authentic pieces feature hallmarks denoting gold purity and maker marks, hand-carved decorative work along the gallery, and antique gem-cutting styles with distinct proportions rather than modern uniform cuts.

An antique multi-stone ring can be worn as a standalone focal piece on any finger, stacked alongside plain modern yellow gold bands, or mixed with contemporary gem-set jewellery.

Clean the setting using warm water, mild liquid detergent, and a soft toothbrush, taking care around claw settings and avoiding ultrasonic cleaners or chemical solutions.
