Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 19th century, a Swedish secretaire chest combines vertical drawer storage with a drop-front or pull-out writing surface. Influenced by Biedermeier design principles, these pieces emphasize clean geometric lines, flame mahogany veneers, and functional interior compartments.

These pieces typically feature solid pine or birch carcases veneered in highly figured curl or flame mahogany, often in book-matched patterns. Construction details include hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original brass escutcheons, and polished French polish finishes.

Authentic 19th-century Swedish furniture displays hand-sawn secondary timbers, hand-cut dovetails on drawer linings, and natural age-related shrinkage marks along veneer seams. Look for period-correct locks, cast brass keyhole escutcheons, and characteristic Scandinavian Biedermeier proportions.

Position the secretaire as a focal point in a hallway, bedroom, or living room, leaving adequate space in front for the drop-down writing flap. Pair the rich wood tones with contemporary abstract artwork above and simple ceramics or brass lighting to balance classic craftsmanship with modern minimalism.

Keep mahogany furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber movement, veneer lifting, and colour fading. Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually along the grain to preserve the patination.
