C. 1880, Howard and Sons, (Blue) Armchair (English)

19th century
Description

C. 1880, Howard & Sons, Armchair (English).

This late Victorian, country house armchair by Howard & Sons is raised on turned walnut front legs and splayed rear legs, upon original brass Howard & Sons castors. The rear leg also bears the serial stock number, plus HOWARD & SONS LTD. BERNERS ST.

The chair is reported to have been reupholstered, circa 1975, in light blue Colefax and Fowler fabric, purchased from The Chintz Shop on Ebury Street in London.

CONDITION:

Overall the chair is in good structural condition with minor scratches to the legs. The fabric itself has stood the test of time and is in good condition. The glue holding the braid around the bottom has dried and browned and would benefit from a gentle clean.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Howard & Sons armchairs, originating in nineteenth-century London, are defined by low profile frames, deep seats, coil-spring construction, and high-density down padding designed for relaxed seating.

Victorian armchairs utilised hardwood frames, typically oak or beech, fitted with steel coil springs, horsehair, and feather or down padding, completed with turned walnut or mahogany legs on brass castors.

Authentic pieces usually feature stamped rear legs with the makers name and location, castors engraved with the company name, or original cotton ticking bearing the Howard & Sons monogram.

Positioning a patterned Victorian armchair alongside modern minimalist side tables or neutral architectural elements creates a balanced focal point within contemporary or transitional interior schemes.

Fabric upholstery requires regular low-suction vacuuming and protection from direct sunlight, while wooden legs benefit from light waxing and castors should be kept free of dust.
