Hermes, Paris - Novelty Horse Head Vide Poche / Dish C.1960

1940 - 1960
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A wonderful vintage vide poche (empty pocket) in silver plate comprising two parts, the dish itself and the removable horse head on a stand.

The dish is fully signed by the iconic French fashion house "Hermes Paris" and "Made In France" together with the makers mark for the top-notch silversmith, Ravinet D'Enfert.

A stylish piece in excellent vintage condition having just returned from our silversmith where it has been professionally cleaned and polished, restoring it to it's former glory; dating to c.1960 measuring 5 1/2" in diameter x 2" tall.

Thierry Hermès on the Grands Boulevards in Paris, Hermès began as a humble harness and saddlery workshop serving European noblemen. Over six generations, the family-led business transitioned from equestrian gear into a global luxury empire encompassing leather goods, silver, silk scarves, and ready-to-wear fashion.

Originally started by E. Tonnelier in 1845, it became Ravinet d'Enfert in 1891 after Louis Ravinet and Charles d'Enfert joined forces. Famed for Art Nouveau and Art Deco designs, the firm created luxury silverware for elite clients—including custom pieces for Hermès—before closing in 1984.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A vide poche, translating literally from French as empty pockets, is a shallow tray or dish placed near an entrance or on a desk to store small daily items such as coins, keys, and cuff links.

Mid-century luxury vide poches were frequently crafted from solid silver, silver plate, fine porcelain, or leather, often accented with sculpted bronze or metal decorative elements.

Authentic mid-century Hermes silver pieces typically display crisp engraved or stamped maker marks, such as HERMES PARIS, along with official French purity hallmarks or silver plate stamps.

A silver vide poche functions as a practical accent on a hallway console, bedside table, or executive desk to organize personal jewellery and keys while providing a metallic focal point.

Clean silver items using a soft cotton cloth and a specialised silver polish to remove oxidisation without stripping delicate silver plating or damaging detailed relief work.
