An Antique Trinity House Money Box- Inlaid with Ships and a Lighthouse

Description

A 19th Century Trinity House  money box, skilfully inlaid on the front with scenes of  a lighthouse and the central focus  a steam and sail merchant ship, with multiple rigging masts and a large central steam funnel pouring out the exhaust.

There are various flags, showing its British in origin.

Note in the distance  there is a secondary ship directly behind the lighthouse, emphasising a busy shipping lane or approaching the harbour.

Executed in stained and natural woods and enhanced with ink and colour. The top has a slot for the coins, which are retrieved from the base where a circular section opens

Note: The corporation of Trinity House is the official authority for lighthouses in Great Britain, dating from 1514, responsible for lighthouses, navigation aids, seafarer and pilotage. While on station, keepers of lighthouses and lightships made boxes with fancy wood inlays, often featuring ships and nautical scenes. The keepers sold these boxes directly to captains and crew of sailing vessels using Trinity House services. Most boxes were inlaid with sailing ships, flags, houses etc. and are highly prized boxes nowadays.

This box measures 18 cm w x 11.5 cm h x 12.2 cm d.
