Large Walnut Stepped Open Bookcase

1900 - 1920
Description

A handsome and unusual walnut waterfall open bookcase of generous proportions, dating from the early 20th century. The distinctive stepped arrangement is set over three tiers, creating six spacious open compartments suitable for books, decorative objects or a collection.

Beautifully figured walnut is used throughout, displaying a rich, warm colour and attractive grain across the backs, shelves and sides. The edges of the open compartments are finished with carved rope-twist mouldings, adding subtle decorative detail while emphasising the architectural waterfall form.

The bookcase stands upon a shaped plinth decorated with carved shell and scrolling motifs, repeated at the corners and centre, and is raised on five short cabriole-style feet.
