Edwardian Mahogany Inlaid Collector's Box

1900 - 1920
Description

A nice example of a large mahogany collector's box dating from the early 20th century. Most likely to have once been a cutlery box it has now been relined in blue silk and velvet with fitted compartments. The sectioning can be removed or modified to suit a variety of uses from collecting coins and medals to storing jewellery.

The box has inlaid crossbanded borders and an inlaid marquetry cartouche. There are two pillars across the drawers which are held in place by brass pins in the lid, meaning they can't be opened when the box is closed. Each drawer has pretty art nouveau style brass handles and there are matching side handles. There is a maker's name in the top of the box for Walker & Hall and it comes with a working key.

It is in good condition for its age and has been very well made and looked after. There are some minor signs of age and use, some light surface marks and knocks but nothing detrimental and it displays well. The interior is clean and tidy. It has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian wooden boxes typically reflect early 20th-century craftsmanship, characterised by refined proportions, rich mahogany timber, and delicate satinwood or boxwood inlay work inspired by 18th-century classical revival styles.

These boxes were predominantly constructed using solid mahogany or rich wood veneers, complemented by dovetail joinery, cast brass hardware, and contrasting marquetry or stringing inlays made from lighter timbers like satinwood.

Authentic pieces display hand-fitted dovetail joints, period-correct brass locks and drop handles with natural surface oxidisation, and hand-cut wood inlay that sits flush against the surrounding veneer without modern synthetic finishes.

Positioning the box on a sideboard, desk, or bookshelf adds historical depth to a contemporary room, while serving a functional purpose for organizing stationery, keys, or small collectibles.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice per year. Keep the item clear of direct sunlight, radiators, and damp environments to prevent wood warping or inlay lifting.
