Antique Brass Wall Barometer / Thermometer

19th century
Description

A good example of an aneroid barometer / thermometer dating from the late 19th Century. It is cased in a brass bulkhead style mount with glass covering the face and the dial is marked with the maker's name "S.Lanyon. Portsea". The white face has a traditional barometer dial from 28" to 31" and a black arrow pointer which reads the pressure and a brass arrow which can be adjusted from the screw in the middle to mark the current pressure and read the change. There is also a glass thermometer below reading in centigrade and Fahrenheit. There is a brass ring in the top of the case for hanging.

It is in good condition for its age. The glass is clean and has no major surface scratches. The face is clean and bright with no damages. The brass case has tarnished over time and has been lightly polished to retain its natural aged patina and displays very nicely. There are some small marks, light surface scratches and small dinks but nothing detrimental. It appears to be in working order and the temperature and pressure are reading accurately.

Approximate Measurements :

Diameter : 5 1/4" / 13.5cm

Width : 2 1/2" / 6cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Invented in the nineteenth century, an aneroid barometer measures atmospheric pressure using a small, flexible metal box called an aneroid cell rather than liquid mercury to forecast weather changes.

Antique barometers are predominantly constructed using solid brass cases, silvered or printed metal dials, and glass covers, often mounted within solid timber or lacquered metal frames.

Authentic period barometers feature period-accurate typography, makers signatures, natural surface oxidisation on the metalwork, and functional internal mechanisms without modern plastic components.

Wall-mounted barometers are best styled as part of a curated gallery wall, positioned in a hallway, or displayed in a home office alongside leather-bound books and traditional woodwork.

Dust the glass face gently with a microfibre cloth and avoid harsh abrasive polishes on the brass casing to preserve its historic aged patina.
