Description

Pair of Late 19th Century French Renaissance Revival Oak Armchairs | Circa 1890–1900

Short Description

A handsome pair of late 19th-century French Renaissance Revival oak armchairs, richly carved with elegant scroll supports, turned stretchers, and decorative pierced aprons. Later upholstered in an attractive woven fabric, they combine exceptional craftsmanship with timeless country house elegance.

Full Description

A distinguished pair of French Renaissance Revival oak armchairs dating from the late nineteenth century, circa 1890–1900. Beautifully crafted from solid oak and richly carved throughout, these elegant chairs perfectly capture the craftsmanship and decorative sophistication that characterised French furniture at the turn of the century.

The substantial oak frames display finely executed scroll-form front supports, boldly turned legs, and decorative stretchers united by an exquisitely carved pierced front rail centred with flowing foliate ornament. The sculptural silhouette reflects the enduring influence of sixteenth-century French Renaissance furniture, interpreted through the refined craftsmanship of the late Victorian and Belle Époque periods.

The chairs have been sympathetically upholstered at a later date in an attractive woven fabric featuring an elegant classical motif. While not newly upholstered, the fabric complements the warmth of the oak and allows the chairs to be enjoyed immediately, whilst also offering future owners the opportunity to recover them should they wish to personalise the appearance.

Generously proportioned with supportive high backs, broad arms, and deep loose cushions, these are wonderfully comfortable chairs that balance impressive decorative presence with everyday practicality. Their quality of construction is evident throughout, from the crisp carving and beautifully turned stretchers to the rich colour and naturally developed patina of the oak.

French Renaissance Revival furniture enjoyed considerable popularity during the closing decades of the nineteenth century, drawing inspiration from the grand interiors of the Loire Valley châteaux while embracing the comfort expected within fashionable homes of the Belle Époque. Today, well-preserved examples remain highly regarded for their architectural form, superb craftsmanship, and enduring decorative appeal.

Whether placed beside a fireplace, within a library, drawing room, country house, or contemporary interior, these handsome armchairs introduce warmth, history, and unmistakable French character.

A beautifully preserved pair of French oak armchairs, combining exceptional craftsmanship, generous proportions, and timeless decorative elegance.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Renaissance Revival furniture, popular in the late nineteenth century, incorporates architectural motifs, intricate wood carving, classical scrollwork, and robust proportions inspired by sixteenth-century designs.

These armchairs typically feature solid oak or walnut frames decorated with hand-carved details, combined with traditional spring or horsehair upholstery covered in rich patterned textiles.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved elements with minor variations, mortise and tenon joinery, historical wear on lower stretchers, and natural oxidisation on the timber surfaces.

Pairing these substantial carved armchairs with minimalist contemporary tables or neutral walls creates a balanced contrast between historical craftsmanship and modern design.

Clean the timber using a soft cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically along the grain, while vacuuming the upholstery gently on low suction to remove dust without damaging fibres.
