Regency Brass Inlaid Mahogany Octagonal Fusee Wall Clock Barnard

19th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

An attractive Regency brass-inlaid mahogany octagonal wall clock, dating from the early 19th century, with a painted Roman numeral dial signed “Barnard, 16 Chapel St.”

The octagonal mahogany case is particularly decorative, each section of the broad surround inlaid in brass with stylised foliate motifs and divided by fine brass stringing. The warm mahogany and brass decoration give the clock a handsome and distinctive Regency appearance.

The painted dial has black Roman numerals and steel hands, enclosed behind a glazed brass bezel. The clock is fitted with a single-fusee movement and is supplied with its pendulum and key.

A particularly appealing example of the classic Regency octagonal wall clock, distinguished by its richly decorated brass-inlaid case and signed dial.

DIMENSIONS

Width: 37 cm

CONDITION

The clock presents attractively overall, with a pleasing colour and good definition to the decorative brass inlay.

There are marks, knocks, scratches and minor losses commensurate with age and use. The painted dial shows age-related wear and discolouration, with a larger area of paint loss and/or historic restoration around the VII–VIII numerals, together with further minor marks and wear, as shown in the photographs.

The case has minor age-related wear and imperfections, while retaining a very attractive overall appearance. The brass bezel has expected tarnishing and wear.

The clock is supplied with its pendulum and key. The movement has not been tested and the clock is therefore sold as untested, with no guarantee as to working order or timekeeping.

Overall, a handsome and unusually decorative Regency wall clock with an attractive brass-inlaid mahogany case and plenty of period character.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase. If there are any critical dimensions then please check these with us before purchase.

A Regency fusee wall clock is a 19th-century English timepiece powered by a spring movement that utilises a conical fusee gear to regulate mechanical tension. These clocks were typically housed in octagonal or circular mahogany cases decorated with brass inlays during the Regency period.

These timepieces were predominantly constructed using mahogany wood or mahogany veneers, often embellished with floral brass inlays. The dial face was commonly made of painted sheet iron, enclosed behind glass within a hinged brass bezel.

Authentic Regency wall clocks exhibit period design characteristics including foliate brass scrollwork, octagonal mahogany surrounds, cast brass bezels, and hand-painted Roman numerals. Internally, they feature a wire or gut-line fusee movement rather than modern quartz or key-wound pendulum assemblies.

An octagonal fusee wall clock functions as a focal architectural accent when mounted on a narrow wall, above a sideboard, or over a fireplace mantelpiece. The deep mahogany timber and brass details harmonize with both modern neutral palettes and traditional dark interiors.

The mechanical movement requires periodic servicing by a qualified horologist to clean and lubricate the gears. The wooden case should be dusted with a microfibre cloth and treated occasionally with a high-quality natural beeswax to protect the mahogany veneer and brass inlay.
