18th Century Andean Colonial Oil Painting – Madonna and Child

18th century
Description

18th Century Andean Colonial Oil Painting – Madonna and Child

A South American colonial devotional painting in oil on canvas, dating to the 18th century and attributed to the Cuzco School or a related Andean workshop, likely Peru or Upper Peru (modern Bolivia). The work depicts the Virgin and Child in traditional stylised form, with floral and gold-painted detailing and a red patterned robe, set against a backdrop of drapery.

Painted on a coarse linen canvas, the work retains its original hand-carved stretcher. The surface shows craquelure and areas of wear consistent with age, particularly to the lower edge, but remains stable and legible.

Unrestored and offered as found, with characterful age throughout.

Dimensions: 32 x 40 cm

Medium: Oil on canvas

Condition: Unrestored. Craquelure and paint losses visible. Warping to stretcher.

Provenance: From a private collection

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Andean Colonial art, particularly from the Cuzco School, originated in the Peruvian Andes during the Spanish Viceregal period, blending European devotional iconography with native indigenous artistic techniques and symbolism.

Artists typically utilised hand-woven canvas or stretched linen supports painted with oil pigments, often embellishing religious robes and halo detailing with intricate gold leaf application known as brocateado.

Authentic period artworks exhibit age-appropriate craquelure across the paint surface, hand-loomed backing textiles, natural mineral-based pigment tones, and distinctive flattened iconographic perspectives typical of viceregal workshop production.

A historical canvas serves as a focal point in contemporary spaces when hung against neutral, textured backdrops or integrated into a curated maximalist wall layout alongside diverse decorative objects.

Display the canvas away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and artificial heat sources, dusting gently with a soft dry brush while avoiding liquid cleaners or chemical polishes.
