Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 19th century, pet portraiture gained immense popularity across Britain, driven by Queen Victorias affection for animals and the rising status of domestic pets. Artists specialised in capturing the distinct likeness and personality of hunting dogs and companion breeds using oil on canvas.

Paintings from this period were typically executed with oil pigments on stretched linen canvas or wooden panels. Frames were constructed from timber coated in gesso, featuring hand-carved or molded ornamentation finished with gold leaf gilded surfaces.

Authentic period paintings display natural age-related craquelure across the paint surface, subtle darkening of varnish, and historic stretching hardware on the reverse. The frames often show legitimate wear to the gilt finish, exposing the reddish bole or white gesso beneath.

An antique oil portrait can serve as a focal point above a mantelpiece or be integrated into an eclectic gallery wall. Pairing dark, traditional oil artwork with modern minimalist furnishings creates a balanced juxtaposition of historical character and contemporary design.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, dampness, and heat sources to prevent cracking or warping. Dust the frame and canvas gently with a soft, dry microfibre brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaning solvents.
