Georgian Oak & Mahogany Crossbanded Chest of Drawers

18th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

A substantial and attractive George III oak and mahogany crossbanded chest of drawers dating from around 1800, with strongly figured oak drawer fronts, rich colour and pleasing proportions. A practical size with generous storage, it would work particularly well in a bedroom, hallway or living space.

The moulded rectangular top sits above two short and three graduated long drawers, with figured oak fronts framed by contrasting mahogany crossbanding. The drawers are fitted with brass swan-neck handles and the chest stands on shaped bracket feet.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 108 cm

Width: 102 cm

Depth: 53 cm

CONDITION

The chest is in good, solid and usable condition, with a rich colour and attractive figuring to the oak. The drawers run well and the joints are stable.

There are marks, knocks, scratches and areas of wear commensurate with age and use. There are some historic repairs, patches and losses to the veneers and crossbanding, including a replaced section on the top left drawer, and staining around the locks where different escutcheons were previously fitted. The brass swan-neck handles are later replacements.

These historic repairs remain visible and form part of the chest's character. Overall, it is a handsome and substantial Georgian chest with particularly attractive figured drawer fronts, presenting well and ready for use.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase. If there are any critical dimensions then please check these with us before purchase.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian chests of drawers are typically constructed from native hardwoods such as oak or walnut, often featuring mahogany crossbanding, brass swan-neck handles, and bracket feet in a two-short-over-three-long drawer configuration.

Cabinet makers primarily used solid oak, walnut, and mahogany, with drawer linings often crafted from pine or oak and decorative hardware cast from brass.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-sawn drawer bottoms, natural shrinkage in the wood panels, and age-consistent oxidisation around original brass fittings.

Positioning a rich oak chest against a neutral or dark backdrop creates a grounding focal point, complemented by contemporary artwork or minimalist table lamps.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish twice a year while keeping the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement.
