Queen Anne Walnut & Laburnum Toilet Mirror

18th century
Description

An elegant Queen Anne period and later walnut and laburnum banded toilet mirror, incorporating early 18th century elements.

The base is fitted with three short drawers over one long drawer, with small brass knobs and a central engraved brass escutcheon, and is raised on small bun feet.

The combination of richly coloured walnut and contrasting laburnum banding is particularly attractive, and the mirror has a pleasing sculptural quality typical of early 18th century dressing furniture.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A toilet mirror, also known as a dressing glass, is a small tabletop mirror supported by uprights, often set above a box-form base containing miniature drawers, popularised during the Queen Anne period in early 18th-century England.

These pieces were predominantly crafted using native and imported woods such as walnut and laburnum, featuring techniques like oyster veneering, feather-banding, and hand-cut dovetail joints within the base drawers.

Authentic early 18th-century pieces display hand-sawn timber backings, period-correct brass drop handles or escutcheons, hand-cut dovetails, and light foxing or subtle distressing on original glass plates.

Place the mirror atop a sideboard, console table, or chest of drawers to function as a focal point alongside modern ceramics, neutral textiles, and muted table lamps.

Position the item away from direct sunlight and radiators to protect the timber veneer, apply a high-grade beeswax polish twice a year using a soft cotton cloth, and dust the frame with a dry microfibre duster.
