Georgian Figured Walnut Escritoire Bureau C.1715–1725

18th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

A fine George I period figured walnut escritoire, dating to circa 1715–1725, of elegant proportions and retaining an exceptionally attractive fitted interior.

The moulded cornice sits above a cushion-moulded frieze drawer and a quarter-veneered, feather-banded fall front, opening to reveal a beautifully arranged writing interior fitted with an array of ebony-strung pigeonholes, small drawers, shaped dividers and a central cupboard, providing both visual interest and practical storage.

The lower section is fitted with three long crossbanded drawers, raised on shaped bracket feet. The figured walnut veneers display an attractive colour and pleasing grain throughout, complemented by the contrasting ebony stringing and refined early eighteenth-century proportions.

A handsome and practical George I period escritoire, combining elegant cabinet making with a highly decorative and functional interior.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 177cm

Width: 101cm

Depth: 56cm

CONDITION

The escritoire displays the expected light marks, knocks and surface wear associated with over three hundred years of age and use.

There are some minor losses, historic repairs and small splits to the veneers, principally including some losses around the feet to the left-hand side and minor splits to the inside of the fall front. The fall front opens and closes well, the drawers run smoothly, and the joints remain sound. A working key is present for both the fall front and the internal cupboard.

Overall, this is a well-preserved example with an attractive colour and beautifully figured walnut veneers, retaining a fine fitted interior and presenting very well for its age.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase. If there are any critical dimensions then please check these with us before purchase.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An escritoire bureau is a tall writing cabinet originating in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, characterised by a drop-down or fall-front panel that creates a flat writing surface when lowered.

Furniture of this period was predominantly crafted using solid oak or pine carcasses veneered with figured walnut, fruitwood inlays, and crossbanding, finished with hand-cast brass escutcheons and handles.

Authentic pieces feature hand-sawn dovetail joints, oak or pine drawer linings with original hand-planing marks, period-correct brass hardware fitting original construction holes, and natural surface patination in non-exposed areas.

Positioning a substantial walnut escritoire against a neutral or dark backdrop allows its complex timber grain to act as an anchor piece in a contemporary study, hallway, or living room scheme.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or bleaching, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year.
