Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the early twentieth century and reaching a stylistic peak during the Art Deco era, enamelled sterling silver cigarette cases functioned both as practical containers and status symbols. Craftsmen used techniques such as engine turning and hand-painted vitreous enamelling to produce intricate geometric and botanical decorations.

These cases were typically constructed from solid sterling silver with a hinged frame and a secure push-button catch. The exterior surfaces often feature engine-turned guilloche patterns cut into the metal, overlaid with layered vitreous enamel that was fired at high temperatures to create a durable, glossy finish.

Authentic pieces carry British hallmarking stamped on the interior rim or inner covers, indicating the silver purity, assay office, date letter, and makers mark. In addition, hand-painted enamel work from this era displays fine brushwork and slight surface variations under magnification, contrasting with modern uniform printed reproductions.

While originally designed for personal use, these items are now commonly displayed flat or prop-mounted on desk surfaces, bedside tables, or inside glass display cabinets. They serve as functional holders for business cards, small keepsakes, or simply as decorative accent pieces alongside contemporary accessories.

Enamelled surfaces should be wiped gently with a soft microfibre cloth and kept free from abrasive chemical cleaners or ultrasonic baths, which can crack the enamel layer. The un-enamelled silver areas may be polished using a dedicated silver cloth, taking care not to drag tarnish remover onto the painted panels.
