Victorian 18ct Gold Turquoise & Old Cut Diamond Trilogy Ring Circa 1890

19th century
Description

Spectacular Late Victorian 18ct Gold Turquoise & Diamond Ring

A particularly beautiful late Victorian turquoise and diamond ring, finely crafted in 18 carat yellow gold and dating to circa 1890.

The ring features a trilogy of gorgeous polished cabochon turquoises, the larger central stone flanked by two slightly smaller examples. Their wonderfully vivid sky-blue colour is exceptionally well matched, and the smooth domed cabochons create a striking contrast against the rich yellow gold.

Set between the turquoises are four sparkling old-cut diamonds, arranged as two pairs. Their bright flashes of light provide an elegant counterpoint to the intense blue of the turquoise and are entirely in keeping with the character of this late 19th-century jewel.

What makes the ring particularly appealing is its beautifully detailed Victorian setting. Beneath the gemstones is an ornate pierced gallery formed from scrolling gold work, which continues into the decorative shoulders. Viewed from the side, the craftsmanship is every bit as attractive as the gemstones themselves.

The combination of turquoise, old-cut diamonds and warm 18ct gold is quintessentially Victorian, while the scale of the ring makes it very wearable today. It has considerable presence on the hand without being overly large.

A high-quality and wonderfully decorative antique ring, equally suitable as a distinctive dress ring, collector's piece or an unusual antique engagement ring.

A Victorian trilogy ring features three principal gemstones set horizontally in a row, traditionally symbolising the past, present, and future. Popular during the late 19th century, these rings frequently combined coloured gemstones like turquoise with diamonds set into detailed gold scrollwork.

Late Victorian turquoise jewellery frequently utilised 18ct yellow gold paired with polished blue turquoise cabochons. These were often accented by old European or old mine cut diamonds set within hand-carved openwork galleries.

Authentic Victorian rings often feature openwork scrollwork along the gallery, hallmarking indicating gold purity, and hand-cut diamonds with distinctive irregular facets. Genuine period turquoise may also demonstrate natural variations in hue across individual cabochons.

Victorian trilogy rings complement contemporary attire when worn as a standalone focal piece on the hand. Alternatively, they can be layered alongside plain yellow gold bands or slender gemstone rings to create a curated jewellery stack.

Turquoise is a porous gemstone that requires careful handling; contact with water, cosmetics, and chemical agents should be strictly avoided. Clean gold mountings gently with a dry microfibre cloth and store the piece away from direct sunlight.
