Ritas Bazaar has dated this Cantagalli Renaissance Majolica Ewer to the 19th Century.
The ewer is distinguished by its sculptural heron or stork handle, while the matching vase shares the same Renaissance Revival baluster form with a scalloped rim and pedestal foot. Both pieces are hand-painted in underglaze polychrome enamels in the classic Raffaellesco style with fantastic birds, a winged siren, scrolling acanthus foliage and grotesques, finished with traditional geometric borders in cobalt blue, ochre yellow, copper green and manganese.
The early freehand underglaze Cantagalli cockerel (Gallo) marks are of particular importance. Painted individually by different workshop artists, one appears in manganese black and the other in cobalt blue. Neither includes later export inscriptions such as "Italy" or "Made in Italy". As many Cantagalli models remained in production for decades, dating depends upon the combination of the factory mark, painting style, glaze characteristics and manufacturing features. This pair displays all the characteristics associated with the highly regarded early production of the Ulisse Cantagalli period.
During the late 19th century Cantagalli became internationally recognised for reviving the artistic traditions of the Italian Renaissance maiolica workshops, receiving major awards throughout Europe. Works produced during the lifetime of Ulisse Cantagalli remain among the most sought-after examples of the Italian Renaissance Revival.

Condition:
The ewer remains in excellent antique condition, with only a few small chips to the sculptural bird handle. The accompanying vase has minor enamel chips to the upper rim and foot rim but is otherwise in excellent condition. Ultraviolet examination revealed no evidence of restoration or repair.
