Laugharne Glass Ruby Vanity Set with Hallmarked Sterling Silver Overlay, C.1980s

Description

A fine vintage British studio glass vanity set produced by Laugharne Glass, Carmarthenshire, Wales, during the 1980s. Comprising a cylindrical vase, a perfume decanter and a matching scent bottle with their original stoppers, the set is an excellent example of the studio's distinctive combination of hand-blown coloured glass and hallmarked sterling silver overlay. This is a famous British studio glass from the late 20th century.

The transparent deep ruby (cranberry) glass was individually hand-blown before receiving a thick hallmarked sterling silver overlay. The silver was mechanically applied and then carefully hand engraved with flowering wild rose branches and foliage. The decanter is decorated with an elegant Art Nouveau Scroll & Volute design, complementing the floral decoration of the remaining pieces.

Both original stoppers were individually ground by hand to produce an accurate airtight fit. The vase and scent bottle retain their original factory paper labels reading "Hand Made by Laugharne", while the vase carries a clearly visible "925" sterling silver hallmark.

Laugharne Glass specialised in limited-production coloured studio glass with exceptionally thick sterling silver overlays. Production ceased following the death of the workshop's principal master glassblower around 2010, making complete original vanity sets increasingly scarce.
