Chinese Cloisonné Enamel Scholar's Brush Washer, Beijing, C.1890

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A fine antique Chinese cloisonné enamel scholar's brush washer dating to the late Qing Dynasty, circa 1890. Traditionally used as part of a scholar's writing table, this elegant vessel reflects the high standards of cloisonné craftsmanship for which Beijing became internationally renowned.

The decoration was executed by soldering hundreds of fine copper wires onto the copper body to create individual cloisons, which were filled with coloured vitreous enamels before being repeatedly fired and polished. This complex process produced the brilliant colours and refined finish associated with the finest Chinese cloisonné.

The substantial copper body is of compressed globular form with an inverted rim and a short ring foot. Both the exterior and interior are decorated with continuous spiral cloud scrolls and stylised lotus blossoms against a rich turquoise-blue ground. The inner walls are additionally enriched with an imbricated fish-scale wire pattern beneath translucent enamel, demonstrating the remarkable precision of the workmanship.

The underside is fully counter-enamelled in matching turquoise and retains characteristic historic firing pinholes and kiln pitting. The unmarked base is typical of Chinese cloisonné produced during this period, while the exposed copper rim and foot preserve their original dark historic patina.

Dimensions:

Weight 758 g

Height 6.8 cm

Diameter 20 cm

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A brush washer, historically known as a xuanxi, is a vessel used in China for rinsing ink from calligraphy and painting brushes. Positioned on a scholars desk alongside inkstones and brush rests, these pieces served both a functional purpose and as symbols of refined taste during the Qing dynasty.

Traditional cloisonne involves soldering delicate metal wires onto a cast copper or bronze base to form intricate compartments or cloisons. These compartments are filled with coloured enamel pastes, fired at high temperatures, and subsequently ground and polished to create a smooth surface.

Authentic antique cloisonne often displays subtle imperfections such as microscopic pitting in the enamel surface and natural patination or oxidisation on exposed metal rims. Older pieces also exhibit handcrafted variation in the wirework density and heavy visual weight due to their solid copper or bronze cores.

A decorative enamel vessel can be placed on an office desk, console table, or bookshelf to add historical texture. Its turquoise tones contrast effectively with dark wood surfaces, polished brass accents, or modern neutral backdrops.

Antique enamelware should be gently dusted with a dry, soft microfibre cloth to remove surface debris. Avoid immersing the piece in water or using abrasive chemical cleaners, as moisture can seep beneath the wirework and cause internal oxidisation of the metal base.
