Antique Monumental Colonial Planter's Chair Original Leather C1860

19th century
For Sale by MebleinUK
Description

An exceptional nineteenth-century colonial Planter's Chair, dating from approximately 1860 Originally associated with British plantations in India and Ceylon, these distinctive chairs were designed to provide comfort in the warm climate of the British Empire.

The most recognisable feature of the Planter's Chair is its ingenious extending arms, which fold out to support the legs, transforming the armchair into a comfortable reclining seat. These remarkable pieces were traditionally found on the verandas, in libraries and in the drawing rooms of colonial estates, where they became symbols of elegance and leisure.

Crafted from solid hardwood and upholstered in beautifully aged natural leather, this chair showcases outstanding nineteenth-century craftsmanship. The original leather has developed a rich patina over time and remains in remarkably good condition, free from cracks or major damage. Decorative brass studding and turned front legs further enhance its character and authenticity.

With its imposing proportions and timeless design, this magnificent chair would make a striking addition to a country house, library, study or any interior inspired by colonial or traditional British style.

Seat height: 55 cm

Very good antique condition. The frame is solid and sturdy, and the original leather upholstery is exceptionally well preserved, showing only minor signs of age consistent with its history.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A planters chair is a type of low reclining armchair featuring extended flat arms, originally designed in 19th-century tropical colonies for relaxing with elevated legs.

Planters chairs were typically crafted from tropical hardwoods such as teak or mahogany to withstand warm climates, featuring woven cane or leather upholstery alongside brass fastenings.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved joinery, swivelling or extendable arm mechanisms, natural surface patination on the timber, and hand-tacked leather or cane seating.

Position the chair as an accent piece alongside minimal side tables, low lighting, and woven natural textiles to contrast historical craftsmanship with modern decor.

Dust the timber gently with a soft dry cloth, nourish original leather using specialised hide balm, and keep the object positioned away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources.
